Care Packages for the Military

This Memorial Day, in addition to attending parades or other celebratory events to honor people who have given their life to our country, why not spend some time putting together a care package for someone you know who is actively serving in our nations military? It’s the ideal way to remember the servicemen and women who have made an impact on our country while showing appreciation for those currently protecting our freedoms. If you don’t know someone personally, ask around. Surely you know another person who does. Here are some ideas for your package:

Underwear– No matter where your troop member is located, they likely need new socks and underwear on a recurring basis. It might not seem like the best items to send, but the recipient will surely appreciate them.

Individually Wrapped Snacks– For people always on the go, snacks in their own wrappers are ideal for carrying around light but efficient calorie sources.

Hygiene Supplies– Soaps, toothbrushes and shower items are a great tool to include in your package because they are integral to keeping the troops clean and healthy.

Games– When they’re not training or on a mission, service members can get bored just like any other person. How about sending an electronic / board games or mental stimulation like Sudoku that can help pass the time?

Books– Much like games, books provide a sense of comfort and escapism that allow troops to peacefully and enjoyably pass the time.

Reminders of Home– Pictures, postcards, letters and other personal items from you sometimes are the best items within a package. Create or include something that reminds them of home.

Once you’ve compiled your package items, create a list and count of each piece to include inside your package. Be sure to properly address and seal your package before shipping it to your favorite person in uniform. And remember this holiday weekend that there is always someone out there keeping America safe.

Best Pets for Apartments

It’s no secret that owning a pet can help you de-stress after a long day at work or class, but finding the right pet for your apartment can be a bit more challenging. Certain animals require more attention and commitment than others, while some can more or less take care of themselves. So long as your apartment is pet friendly, there is an animal friend right for your situation. fishtank

Fish– Aquatic pets require very little attention so far as feeding and exercise are concerned. However, your fishy friends will require a tank equivalent to their size and feeding every other day.  And don’t forget cleaning the tank! Some fish prefer to be alone, but others love to school in a group.

Insects– Much like fish, insects are low maintenance. But also like fish, they are not a pet you can really get close to and their lifespan is short. If this kind of pet is right for you, there are plenty of varieties to own such as ants, millipedes or even spiders.

Reptiles or Amphibians- Generally speaking, reptiles and amphibians can have a significantly long lives compared to the aforementioned critters. But they can also provide the entertainment and personality needed to spruce up an apartment. Think about whether you want an aquarium for frogs or turtles, or a terrarium for snakes, lizards or tortoises.

Birds– Flying friends like these can be a very chatty and fun addition to your life. They require a lot of exercise activities within their cage birdsand regular feeding and cleaning. The bigger the cage the better and you might even think about letting them out in your space so they can stretch their wings.

Cats– This self sufficient creature is a staple for most apartment dwellers. Cats require regular feeding and playtime, but are able to manage and entertain themselves if need be. They are the first pet on this list that you can really cuddle up to and have several breeds to choose from.

Dogs– Another furry friend on the list is the canine. Since they have a plethora of breeds, choose a smaller, less active kind for apartment living. You can go big if you have the time and space nearby to exercise them. More importantly, since dogs are high maintenance and need regular food and exercise, be sure you are truly committed to this pet before adopting.

No matter what pet you are thinking of adopting, ensure that you have the time, patience and intentions to see the animal comfortably through their entire life.

Mother’s Day Gifts

In little over a week, it will be Mother’s Day and if you haven’t purchased your gift for your adoring mom yet, here are some surefire ideas:

Flowers: These brightly colored and fresh scented gifts are easily the fastest way to brighten your mother’s day. They’ll put a little spring in her step and a smile on her face.

Chocolates: If you’re mother has a sweet tooth, which we bet she does, buying a nice box of chocolates is the easiest way to her heart. But we suggest you go the extra mile and compile the box yourself either from individual truffles or all the candy she enjoys.

Clothes: If you aren’t sure of the size or style your mom wears, invest in purchasing a gift card to the store of your mother’s choice. Sometimes this is better than fumbling through choices yourself.

Jewelry: Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, so why don’t you get something sparkling for your mother? You could go big for a bracelet or necklace, or stay simple with a set of earrings.

Food: For an added personal touch, you could bring your mother out to eat or better yet, cook the meal yourself.

Favorite Things: Does your mother like something different? Old records, teapots, or maybe sports paraphernalia? The aforementioned items are wonderful gifts, but something personal might just be the best gift of all.

No matter what you get her, your mom will appreciate the time and thought you put into these little tokens to commemorate her special day. Like most mom’s, she likely will be happiest to spend time with you or see your smile. But if you live far away and can’t see your mom, these gifts are primed for shipping. So be thankful for all that she’s done for you and make sure she has a happy mother’s day.
